February 2024: Carbon in the Built Environment

๐Ÿ“…ย Held on Tuesday, 20th February 2024โ€”ย ๐Ÿ• ย 08:30-10:30โ€”ย ๐Ÿ“ย Dryden Enterprise Centre, Dryden Street, Nottingham

Synopsis:

What is Carbon in the Built Environment? How can we measure it and how is it a reflection of the 1.5Degrees climate change ambition? Join Will James and Stephen Fernandez from Arup as they talk operational and embodied carbon, discussing building regulation and aspirational requirements on carbon accounting.

All are welcome.

This is going to be an interactive session with a half hour focus on Carbon and then a time for interactive and creative thinking about key projects in the East Midlands.

Don’t miss the chance to contribute to a brighter future for our region and beyond.

Refreshments will be provided.

Meeting Minutes + Notes:

The morning event was well attended (40+) with key themes being presented on Whole Life Carbon and Retrofit. Key points presented were:

  • Design for Whole Life Carbon – considering both the impacts of operational and embodied carbon across the life of the asset.
  • Set targets and use these to influence design decisions.
  • 87% of existing buildings will be occupied in 2050, we must focus on retrofit.
  • Retrofit does not mean we have to compromise. To retrofit well, we can improve;
    • Internal layouts, floor to ceiling heights, improve daylighting and internal health and wellbeing, building performance and others.

As part of the discussion, the following key graphics were presented as design tools:

Debenhams Creative Exercise

The session incorperated some interactivity of ideas – how could we retrofit the Listed Debenhams Building in a Carbon Neutral way – that took carbon as an objective.

You can look at the outputs from the table discussions, by scrolling through the file below. Some of the key themes were:

  • Focus on placemaking; how can the building interact with the city through various different uses (office, school, nursery, residential (social + other), hotel, retail).
  • Desire to bring in Natural Light – through atriums and opening up roof space.
  • Establishing a mutli-tenant approach – breaking the building back up into managable chunks and lettable space that could be developed.
  • Explore opportunities for roof wellbeing spaces, through public spaces, greening and accessibility.

The collaborative exercise was very beneficial and drew out helpful discussions around the room, amongst different stakeholders.
